5 Strategies to Teach Your Toddler How to Say Their Name

Before we have children, we spend much time and energy deciding on the perfect name.

Before we have children, we spend much time and energy deciding on the perfect name. So it makes sense that parents and caregivers can’t wait for their little ones to say their name! But what if your child is struggling to say their name?

Here are 5 tips help your toddler learn how to say their name:

  1. Repetition: When learning new words, toddlers need to hear it many times! So incorporate your child’s name throughout the day as often as possible.
  2. Use visuals: Show your toddler pictures of themself and say their name. Better yet play “peek a boo” in a mirror and say your toddler’s name every time!
  3. Sing songs: What toddler doesn’t love music? Make up songs that include your little one’s name.
  4. Model: Model their name while playing. What is better than playing with your favorite toy and hearing your name? (i.e. Sarah is playing with cars!)
  5. Prompt and Encourage: If you feel your little one is close to saying their name, encourage them to say it. Even if they don’t, that’s okay! Keep on modeling your toddler’s name for them.

The big takeaway? Keep practicing in fun and supportive ways. Soon enough your little one will be saying their name!
